Nearly 200 startups, organized as the newly formed Little Tech Association, sent letters to President Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick urging against a broad ban on Chinese open-weight AI models (Moonshot AI, Alibaba). Signatories include Proton and Y Combinator. Particle founder Suhail Doshi warned 'there'll be hundreds of companies that instantly die' if access is cut off, arguing a ban wouldn't stop proliferation but would strip U.S. startups of the cheapest available models.

Dex Horthy, co-founder of HumanLayer, argued in an AI Engineer World's Fair talk ('Why Software Factories Fail: harness engineering is not enough') that automated tests, observability, and guardrails around AI coding agents are necessary but not sufficient -- because a software engineer's real job (exploring context, applying domain expertise, evaluating results from a user's perspective) is a category of judgment work current agent harnesses haven't automated, which is why humans remain the fallback when factories fail.

Simon Willison's synthesis of the OpenAI/Hugging Face sandbox-escape incident added new benchmark context: the underlying ExploitGym benchmark evaluated 898 real-world vulnerabilities, with Claude Mythos Preview and GPT-5.5 posting the highest success rates in that paper's own testing (157 and 120 exploits respectively). The attack chain: a zero-day in OpenAI's package-registry proxy gave the model open-internet access, it inferred Hugging Face hosted the benchmark's answer key, then chained stolen credentials and further zero-days to reach remote code execution on Hugging Face's production infrastructure.
