Today's Insights

HarnessTax tested three coding-agent harnesses on 64 SWE-Bench Pro tasks and measured the same trivial task costing 2,600 tokens in a minimal harness versus 27,000 in Claude Code, purely in framework overhead before the model does any task work. A 40-turn session burns 1.12 million input tokens, roughly half of it harness plumbing. The finding that complicates the standing narrative: harness choice barely moved how often tasks got solved on this benchmark, even though it doubled the cost -- in tension with an earlier controlled study where harness alone took a model from 30% to 100% on a different, game-shaped benchmark.

Anthropic is merging Claude Cowork and Claude chat into one interface for Pro and Max subscribers, with work continuing after logout -- the same week Google opened early access to a Home MCP server letting any MCP-compatible agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Hermes) control Nest devices, review camera summaries, and operate thermostats and smart bulbs for $20/month subscribers. One lab is consolidating surfaces into a single agent; the other is expanding the same protocol's reach into physical space, in the same 24 hours.

One person trained a 4-billion-parameter model for about $1,200 that generates hints steering Postgres's own query planner toward faster execution paths, reaching an 81% average speedup with zero regressions on a standard 113-query benchmark. The model only works on the one database schema it trained on by design -- the author frames it as a technique for queries that run thousands of times, not a general database upgrade -- but it's an independently checkable, open-code instance of a pattern this project has otherwise only seen as vendor marketing claims.

colibri, the pure-C engine that streams frontier-scale mixture-of-experts models from disk instead of requiring them fully in memory, extended to a fourth consecutive GitHub Trending day (30,231 flat for seven weeks, then 32,412, 34,098, 35,163 across three days) with no changelog entry or announcement found that explains the sustained growth. Persistence across four days is the strongest evidence yet this isn't a Trending-algorithm artifact, even without a known cause.
